Pool Repairs Without Draining: What Works Underwater and What Does Not

Draining a pool on Mallorca costs twice: once in the water you dump and once in the 48,000 litres you must put back, if filling is even permitted that month. The good news is that a surprising share of repairs are done underwater or with a partial lowering. Here is where the line runs in 2026.
What can be fixed underwater
Local spot repairs are the classic case: sealing hairline cracks with underwater compounds, treating isolated rust stains, rebedding single loose tiles and sealing skimmer joints from inside. Divers and specialist tools handle jobs that a decade ago meant a drained shell, and the pool stays in service throughout.
What needs a partial lowering
Waterline work lives just below the surface, so dropping the level thirty or forty centimetres opens it up without wasting the volume: waterline tile crust removal, skimmer mouth repairs and light fitting replacements all happen in that band. The water below stays put and is rebalanced afterwards.
What honestly requires draining
Full regrouting, complete resurfacing, structural crack stitching with staples and any renovation of the shell need a dry, prepared surface, no honest company will promise otherwise. The consolation: when the shell is opened anyway, everything is done in one drain, which is exactly why renovations at 8,000 to 20,000 EUR bundle tiles, joints and fittings together.
The restriction era logic
Under water restrictions the calculus tilts further toward underwater repair for small faults, and toward bundling everything into one properly planned renovation for big ones. What kills budgets is the middle path: draining twice in three years for jobs that could have shared one.
Ask before you drain, the answer is more often no than owners expect. Our network quotes both paths in writing, request free quotes here, and for suspected leaks start with leak detection.
